VIEWS FROM THE 2008 OLYMPIC TRIALS
Two of TEAM FLORIDA GULFCOAST'S MOST DECORATED ATHLETES COMPETED AT THE RECENT USA WEIGHTLIFTING OLYMPIC TRIALS LAST MONTH IN ATLANTA, GA.

Jessica Fides, Silver medal winner from the 2007 World University Cup and 2004 National Collegiate Champion competed in her second Olympic Team Trials.

Pat Judge, also a silver medal winner at the 2007 World University Cup as well as the 2007 American Champion and 2008 National Champion, competed at his first Olympic Trials.

This valuable experience should help each of these athletes as they progress in their careers with their sights set firmly on the next quad. Congratulations to both of these hard working athletes.

TEAM FLORIDA GULFCOAST'S JON GARCIA BREAKS PERSONAL RECORDS AT THE 2008 JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN CALI, COLUMBIA LAST MONTH
Jon had a great day at the biggest meet of his life to date, going four for six and breaking personal records in the clean and jerk and total at the World Junior Championships. His lifts also broke the Florida State records that he had already held.

Jon is the 2008 National Junior Champion and lives and trains in Palatka, Florida. Aside from his visits to Tampa and Sarasota to visit Coaches Gilyard and Lansky, respectively, Jon does it all by himself, following the Gulfcoast training program as best he can in the hot sun on his driveway or in a shed in the back of his house.

Jon's perseverence, hard work and gritty determination are a testament to his character and should help him as he moves onward and upward in the ranks of USA Weightlifting. Jon would like to thank Team Florida Gulfcoast benefactors Doug Bradbury of Sarasota and Andy and Marion Price of Sarasota for their financial aid in helping him meet his co-pay to travel to Cali for the competititon.

SUNSHINE STATE GAMES A SUCCESS
The annual State Cup was held at the Lakeland Civic Center as part of the Sunshine State Games last month as well. Team Florida Gulfcoast lifters performed to their usual exceptional levels, making a high percentage of lifts, scoring personal bests and coming home with medals.

Ryan Borges, 62 kg Schoolage lifter, went five for six, scoring personal bests in the snatch, clean and jerk and total. His clean and jerk also helped him break the state record in the total. Jordan Borges also had a great day, going six for six with personal records in the snatch, clean and jerk and total. His cousin, Alex Beacheane, also had a six for six perfect day with personal bests in all three categories.

Sarasota's Tim Hedley had a great day as well, scoring big lifts in the snatch, clean and jerk and total. He was also one of the hardest working athletes at the meet as he helped with the lifting, loading and helping with set up and tear down.

Danielle Stamp and Megan McBride continued their taper for the upcoming Schoolage Nationals the week after the Cup, putting up big lifts on their way to personal bests. Chase Rowe also competed in his first SSG, having a great day and going six for six with personal records on both snatch and clean and jerk.

Joyce Kaufman and her daughter Samantha finished off the day with some nice lifts after volunteering all day as loaders and officials. Cory and Jason Aun continued their streak of over ten years of competition at the SSG, trading lifts back and forth as Jason finally scored that 100 kg snatch he has been chasing for some time. Both lifters came away with some big lifts and state cup hardware as well.

Gulfcoast veteran Brittney Benson made a welcome appearance at the State Cup, putting up some big lifts and a mighty clean to go five for six with personal bests in the snatch, jerk and total. Great job for this full time USF student.

Cory followed up his fine performance the next week by helping his wife to bring Gulfcoast's newest lifter into this world with the birth of his second daughter. (see pic below of Cory and his two beautiful daughters).

Thanks to Pat Judge and Jessica Fides, two of our highest level lifters just off performances at the Olympic Trials in May for judging and helping with set up, tear down and loading. And a huge thank you to Dr. Hal Hedley, one of the Board of Advisors members for Gulfcoast, for his always-excellent announcing, scorekeeping and setup. Thanks also to the hard working efforts of Mike, Tim's roommate and Gulfcoast member.

And a big thank you to Gulfcoast member and coach Virgil Young for all his help with the set up, tear down, coaching and loading at the meet. Way to go, Gulfcoast!!

BELATED CONGRATULATIONS
Belated congratulations to Gulfcoast lifter Chris Singleton and his wonderful wife, Melissa, on the blessed birth of their daughter. Another future weightlifter is on the way.
